Greetings Everyone,

The weather is finally starting to shift.  February has been a snowy month, but we are finally starting to see more light at both ends of the day, and the sun is starting to feel warmer.  The sap will be running at its’ peak before we know it.  We have spent the month of February working closely with other departments, and further deepening our level of training.  We spent a couple of evenings at Brattleboro Fire, and learned about different ventilation techniques as well as tuned up our skills in the proper setting up and taking down of ladders.  Many thanks to all personnel at BFD who have worked to make this happen, your work and dedication are greatly appreciated.  Additionally, one of our personnel attended a cold water rescue training at Guilford Fire and although it was cold, the lessons and techniques learned are invaluable tools and resources to have should the need arise.  We have also been spending some time brushing up on our driving skills including; defensive driving strategies, precision driving, and pumping operations.  It has been nice to be working outside as well as getting some hands-on experience.

Even though we are not conducting a formal membership drive at this time, we continue to look for volunteers and are accepting applications on an ongoing basis.  We are currently in need of more EMS providers on our department.  If you are currently an EMT, or have interest in becoming an EMT, please do not hesitate to send me an email, so I can send you an application, and we can discuss your interests.

Traditionally, we have held an annual Corned beef dinner here at the department which the proceeds go to the Vernon Fire Association.  Unfortunately, this year due to COVID, as well as the current needs of the re-structuring process we will not be holding this dinner.  It is our intention that we will bring this back in 2022, as we appreciate the support, and look forward to seeing members of our community at a time where we can socialize and interact.

In just a couple of weeks, we will be turning our clocks back.  It is recommended that we check our smoke detectors at least once a month to ensure they are working properly.  If your smoke alarms are powered by a replaceable battery, it should be changed every 6 months, while the alarm itself should be replaced once every 10 years.  Please use daylight savings time as an opportunity to check and/or replace your smoke and CO alarms, as these continue to be the best tool we have available to us today, that can save lives.
