Home composting workshops held in Vernon

From John Fay, Programs Manager, Windham Solid Waste Management District

The WSWMD held two workshops at the Vernon Rec Center, one on Saturday morning, Sept. 26, and one on Tuesday evening, Sept. 29. A total of 17 Vernon residents attended the workshops. Residents had different background experiences with composting and had different goals, but the informal and comprehensive demonstration of various techniques, bins, and styles allowed for all attendees’ questions to be answered. We believe all left with a good plan for how to handle food waste at home, and with some tips to share with their neighbors.

It is WSWMD’s role to assist member towns in educating residents on beneficial solid waste management techniques. With the closure of Vernon’s drop-off organic waste bins at the town garage, coupled with the recent requirement for organics diversion under state law, the WSWMD and the Vernon Solid Waste Committee thought it was important to provide some direct assistance to Vernon residents on how to compost at home.
