April 2021 legislative update from State Rep. Sara Coffey

Legislative update from State Rep. Sara Coffey

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

I hope that you all have been enjoying the shift to spring! It is nice to feel the softer ground and to hear the peepers! Between spring and the rolling out of the vaccine, there is a lot of hope in the air. It’s all been a nice backdrop to the work we have been doing in the legislature, that is for sure.

We are at the mid-point of the legislative session and over the past two weeks we have been spending longer days on the virtual House floor. It has been a very exciting time to see the fruits of our collective labor coming to the floor. We have been focusing on legislation and investments aimed at helping Vermonters recover from this pandemic and building back better. We have passed signature legislation that centers equity and will benefit rural communities, support women and families, strengthen our safety nets and infrastructure, and assist workers and small and BIPOC-owned businesses.

This session the legislature is also focused on putting the State of Vermont’s public pension system on a path towards long-term sustainability, so that teachers, troopers and all state employees can rely on a well-funded, solvent system when they retire. The proposals being put on the table right now are just that: proposed ideas in an unfolding process. This newsletter includes some of the details and the perspective we’re bringing to this challenge.

If you need help connecting with resources or information, or if you have thoughts about the issues we are debating, please don’t hesitate to contact me or come to one of my coffee hours. I will be hosting my next Coffee with Coffey on Sunday, April 11th from 3–4p.m. (rescheduled from April 4th so as not to conflict with Easter). I hold these meetings over Zoom, and all are welcome. You can find more information and the link at the end of my April newsletter.

It continues to be an honor serving Guilford and Vernon in the Vermont House.

Stay safe and take good care,
