Vernon: A Great Place to Live!

Vernon is a quiet, scenic, rural, safe, and mutually supportive community! We love the views of our forested hills, rolling farmland, scenic ponds, brooks and waterfalls, and the broad Connecticut River. We're proud of our excellent elementary school (and our students have secondary school choice available), our active recreation center with pool, tennis, picnic and softball facilities, well-maintained trails in our Municipal Forest, other natural areas, and a family-friendly beach on the river.

The town's rich history includes an extensive Native American presence and a long, continuing farming tradition. Vernon is in easy commuting distance from Brattleboro, Vt., Greenfield, Mass., and Keene, N.H., and just two hours from downtown Boston. Town-wide broadband supports small businesses and home offices. Nearby are multiple opportunities for skiing, hiking, and boating, as well as a wonderful array of cultural organizations: museums, theaters, music festivals and much more.

If you're considering joining us as a neighbor, please explore this site and check out our page of information for prospective residents!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are my elected officials?

The Town is governed by a five-member Selectboard in between Annual Town Meetings.
The Selectboard meets the first and third Tuesday nights each month (via Zoom currently, meeting ID 825 4632 0660, passcode Vernon).
Public comment is welcome at any meeting.
If you want to get on the agenda, contact the Town Administrator at vernonta@vernonvt.org.

Visit our Town Directory for contact information for the Selectboard and all other elected and appointed town officers.

How is the Town governed?

Vernon has a Town Administrator, who answers to the Selectboard.  The Town Clerk, Town Listers and Town Treasurer are separately elected.  If you’re not sure where to go, start with the Town Clerk or the Town Administrator at 802-257-0292.

To contact other town officers, visit our Town Directory page. For information on meetings of the Selectboard and other boards and committees, visit our Agendas and Minutes page.

What do I do with my garbage and recycling?

Vernon Residential Garbage and Recycling Program (as of October 2024) The Town no longer has a town wide trash and recycling contract. Residents and businesses must contract with their own  hauler, or if they can purchase a gate sticker at the Windham Solid Waste District Management District transfer station in Brattleboro. Some Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can be brought to WSWMD on a daily basis,  including waste oil, paint, and batteries. Starting in April 2021, HHW containers labeled WARNING, POISON, DANGER, CAUTION will be accepted on designated times and dates at a new permanent collection facility. It will be operated seasonally through October of each year. This new facility will replace the annual collection events WSWMD has offered in past years. More info at windhamsolidwaste.org.
